While Ozzy Osbourne has been famous for reality TV shows, quad-bike accidentsand his tempestuous relationship with his wife, let’s not forget that he is also one of heavy metal’s brightest lights.

Ozzy’s career began as bumpily as it continued, kicking off with him being fired from Black Sabbath for his problems with substance abuse. During his tenure with Sabbath, Ozzy became as much known for his onstage theatrics as he was for his otherworldly singing style.

Black Sabbath’s self-titled first album contained what was to become their signature song, Paranoid. Written by Geezer Butler and housing one of the best riffs in rock, Paranoid cemented Ozzy as a bona fide superstar.

Master of Reality and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath followed swiftly and embraced the blues-rock swagger that had become the band’s trademark. Coupled with gothic, occult and gloom-soaked lyrics, they have been described as two of the most-essential albums that any metal fan should own.

Ozzy was fired from Black Sabbath in 1979, as his addictions spiralled out of control. However, within three months, he had signed with Jet Records and began to plan his solo career. It was during this time that Ozzy’s manager, Don Arden, sent his daughter, Sharon, to the US to go and look after him. And the rest, as they say, is history.
