Possessed of the same lyrical waspishness as Bob Dylan and with an almost supernatural ability with a guitar, Courtney Barnett is rewriting the rule book for female solo artists.
Barnett’s career kicked off in 2015 with the release of her debut album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit. Sometimes psychedelic and sometimes leaning towards grunge, songs such as Kim’s Caravan and Depreston suggest that the music acts as a vehicle for Barret’s stream-of-consciousness lyrics.
2018’s Tell Me How You Really Feel is a slightly more stripped back affair. While the bouncy, fuzzy guitars are still there, the sound is more reflective. However, her lyrical whimsy is still in full force, even creating her own words to explore the theme of language not being adequate for complete expression.
A unique artist, Barnett, creates sophisticated music with which to communicate sophisticated ideas.
