Heavy rock or heavy metal? Whichever way you look at them, there’s no denying that AC/DC is one of the biggest and most influential bands on the planet. Loud, bombastic and never short of a riff or two, this Aussie outfit was formed in Sydney in 1973.

Fans of a certain age will consider the incarnation fronted by Bon Scott as definitive. With Scott as lead singer, the band released classic albums, such as High Voltage, Powerage and Highway to Hell. Scott’s untimely passing, in 1980, saw AC/DC faced with the possibility of disbanding. However, after deciding to continue, Brian Johnson stepped in on vocal duties and the second incarnation of the band was born.

Johnson’s first outing on the album, Back in Black, saw AC/DC return to their roots. One of the best-selling albums of all time, it featured riff-heavy rockers, such as Back in Black, You Shook Me All Night Long and Hell’s Bells. Johnson’s raw screech perfectly complemented Angus Young’s guitar-obatics and gave the band a new, yet familiar, edge.

With a formidable canon of songs under their collective belt, AC/DC’s cannot be underestimated. While the band owes a debt of gratitude to the likes of Chuck Berry, groups such as Van Halen, Six Feet Under and Motorhead have all followed in AC/DC’s colossal footsteps.
